Having a blood test? Tell the clinic you take a biotin supplement. These gummies supply 6 mg of biotin, around two hundred times the daily value, and high-dose biotin is known to skew several common laboratory assays. It is a testing issue rather than a health risk, and it matters. Full safety notes.
Biotin For Hair, Skin And Nails
The best-known nutrient in every beauty supplement on the shelf. What it actually does, what the research supports, and the one thing everyone taking it should know.

What biotin is
Biotin is vitamin B7, a water-soluble member of the B group. Its job in the body is to act as a cofactor for a small family of enzymes called carboxylases, which sit at the centre of how the body builds fatty acids and handles amino acids.
That sounds abstract until you remember what hair and nails are made of. Keratin is a protein, and building it depends on the same amino acid machinery. The lipids in the skin's moisture barrier come out of fatty acid synthesis. Biotin is upstream of both.
Why it became the beauty vitamin
Because of what happens when it runs out. True biotin deficiency is uncommon in people eating a varied diet, and when it does occur the signs are strikingly cosmetic: brittle, splitting nails, thinning hair, and dry scaly skin around the nose and mouth.
Correct the deficiency and those signs improve. That is a solid, well-documented observation, and it is the foundation of the entire biotin beauty category.
The step that gets skipped
Going from "correcting a deficiency improves nails" to "everyone's nails will improve" is a leap the evidence does not make for you. Most of the strong biotin data comes from people who were genuinely short of it. Whether topping up somebody already adequate does much is a different question, and a much less settled one.
What the research actually supports
Brittle nails. This is where the case is strongest outside of frank deficiency. Several small studies, some now decades old, reported measurable improvement in nail thickness and splitting over several months of supplementation. The studies are small and mostly uncontrolled, which is worth knowing, and the direction has been consistent.
Hair. Weaker. Biotin supplementation helps in cases where deficiency is the cause of hair thinning — and most hair thinning has other causes, from hormones to iron status to genetics. Reviews of biotin for hair growth in people without a deficiency have generally not found strong evidence.
Skin. Mostly extrapolated from the deficiency picture rather than demonstrated directly. Biotin has a genuine role in producing the fatty acids that make up the skin's barrier; that is a mechanism, not a trial result.
Why the doses are so enormous
The daily value for biotin is 30 micrograms. Beauty supplements routinely contain 5,000 or 10,000 micrograms — five to ten milligrams — which is hundreds of times more. Gelagen supplies 6 mg, or 20,000 percent of the daily value.
Two reasons. The first is that the nail studies used amounts in that range, so the industry follows the studies. The second is less scientific: on a label, 20,000% looks like value.
Biotin is water soluble and has no established upper intake level, because the surplus is excreted rather than stored. So the high dose is not a toxicity problem. It is, however, a problem of a different kind.
The one thing everyone taking biotin should know
It interferes with blood tests
A great many common laboratory tests are built on biotin-streptavidin chemistry. When a blood sample contains a high level of biotin, those assays can return results that are falsely high or falsely low depending on how the test is designed.
Thyroid panels are the classic example — high-dose biotin can make results look like Graves' disease when nothing of the sort is happening. Cardiac troponin is the serious one: a falsely low troponin in someone with chest pain is genuinely dangerous, and regulators have issued safety communications about exactly this.
The fix takes one sentence. Tell whoever is taking your blood that you use a biotin supplement. Many clinics will ask you to pause it for a few days first.
Getting it from food
Egg yolk, liver, salmon, nuts, seeds, sweet potato and yeast are all good sources, and gut bacteria produce some too. The daily value is small enough that a varied diet generally covers it.
One curiosity worth knowing: raw egg white contains avidin, a protein that binds biotin and stops it being absorbed. It takes a lot of raw egg white over a long time to matter, and cooking destroys avidin entirely. It remains the most interesting sentence in the biotin literature.
Where this leaves you
Biotin is a real nutrient with a real role in the tissues people buy it for. The evidence is strongest for nails, thinner for hair, and largely mechanistic for skin. The doses used are far above nutritional need, for reasons that are part scientific and part commercial, and they are safe but they do skew lab tests.
That is the honest shape of it. Gelagen's 6 mg sits squarely in the normal range for the category — you can see it in context on the ingredients page.

Questions
Six milligrams per two-gummy serving, which the panel gives as 20,000 percent of the daily value.
No. Biotin is water soluble with no established upper limit, and the surplus is excreted. The real issue is interference with blood tests, not toxicity.
The studies that found an effect ran for several months, which fits how slowly nails grow — about 3 mm a month at the fingers.
Ask the clinic. Many ask for a pause of a few days. At minimum, tell them you take it.

On the product
Before you start
Gelagen is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and it is not a treatment for acne, eczema, psoriasis, hair loss or any other diagnosed condition. Not for anyone under 18. If you are pregnant, may become pregnant or are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor first — this formula contains preformed vitamin A. The gummies contain cane sugar and corn syrup, and the biotin in them can interfere with blood tests. Everything we know sits on the safety page.
