Having a blood test? Tell the clinic you take a biotin supplement. These gummies supply 6 mg of biotin, around two hundred times the daily value, and high-dose biotin is known to skew several common laboratory assays. It is a testing issue rather than a health risk, and it matters. Full safety notes.

The B Vitamins Behind A Good Complexion

B6, B12, folate and pantothenic acid do the unglamorous work: building new cells, handling protein and holding moisture. Here is what each one is actually for.

Why they travel as a group

The B vitamins are not chemically related to one another. They were numbered as they were discovered, in what turned out to be the same fraction of a yeast extract, and the name stuck.

What they do share is a job description. Almost all of them work as coenzymes — the small molecules an enzyme needs before it can do anything at all. That puts them upstream of an enormous amount of ordinary metabolism, including everything involved in building a new skin cell.

Four of them are in this formula. Here is each one, and what it is genuinely for.

Vitamin B6 — the protein one

Pyridoxine, supplied here as pyridoxine hydrochloride at 7.4 mg. More than a hundred enzymes depend on B6, and almost all of them handle amino acids — building proteins, breaking them down, converting one into another.

Hair and nails are essentially pure protein. Skin is largely collagen and keratin, which are also proteins. A nutrient sitting at the centre of protein metabolism is therefore not a marketing stretch; it is a structural requirement.

B6 deficiency is not common, but it is not vanishingly rare either — certain medications deplete it, and so does heavy alcohol use. One of the recognised signs is a scaly, greasy dermatitis around the nose and eyebrows.

The one B vitamin worth counting across products

B6 is water soluble, which usually means surplus is harmless. It is the exception. Very high intakes sustained over years have been associated with peripheral neuropathy — tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, usually reversible on stopping.

The amounts in beauty supplements are far below the levels in those case reports. It is still the nutrient to add up if you take a multivitamin, a B-complex and this at the same time.

Vitamin B12 — the cell-division one

Supplied here as methylcobalamin at 6 mcg, a form the body uses directly rather than having to convert. B12 is required for making DNA, which means it is required by every tissue that divides — and skin divides more or less constantly.

This is the nutrient in the formula most likely to be filling a genuine gap. B12 occurs naturally only in animal foods, so anyone eating little or none is at real risk. Absorption also declines with age, and several very common medications interfere with it. Deficiency shows up in skin as pallor and sometimes hyperpigmentation, and in the nervous system in ways that matter a great deal more.

Folate — B12's partner

442 micrograms DFE, working in the same pathway. Folate and B12 hand a chemical group back and forth in a cycle that DNA synthesis depends on, which is why a shortage of either produces the same kind of anaemia and why they are almost always formulated together.

For a tissue that replaces itself every month, a functioning cell-division pathway is not optional. Folate is also the nutrient every pregnancy guideline in the world is built around, which is another reason for anyone pregnant to be counting what they take across all their products.

Pantothenic acid — the moisture one

Vitamin B5, as d-calcium pantothenate at 5.2 mg. Its role is to form coenzyme A, which sits at the centre of fat metabolism — and the skin's moisture barrier is built from lipids.

You have almost certainly met its derivative already. Panthenol, or pro-vitamin B5, is one of the most widely used moisturising and soothing ingredients in topical skincare, which is where the reputation comes from.

Straightforward deficiency is rare because pantothenic acid is in almost everything — the name comes from the Greek for "from everywhere". Its presence here is about completeness rather than about rescuing anyone.

Reading the percentages

B6 at 449 percent, B12 at 250 percent, folate at 111 percent, pantothenic acid at 104 percent. It is worth understanding why those figures sit where they do.

For water-soluble vitamins, exceeding the daily value is normal in supplementation and largely harmless: what the body does not need, it excretes. The figures reflect what a formulator considered a generous margin rather than a calculated dose. Compare that with the vitamin A on the same panel, deliberately held at 70 percent because it is fat soluble and accumulates.

That contrast is the most informative thing on the whole label, and you can see it laid out on the ingredients page.

Questions

B12 and B6 have the clearest structural roles — cell division and protein metabolism respectively. Biotin gets the marketing, but the whole group is involved.

B12 is the realistic one, particularly if you eat little animal food, are over sixty, or take medication that affects absorption. The others are widely available in food.

Because water-soluble vitamins are commonly formulated well above the daily value and surplus is excreted. It is still worth counting across everything you take.

The alcohol form of pantothenic acid, used topically as a moisturising and soothing ingredient. Same nutrient, different route in.

Before you start

Gelagen is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and it is not a treatment for acne, eczema, psoriasis, hair loss or any other diagnosed condition. Not for anyone under 18. If you are pregnant, may become pregnant or are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor first — this formula contains preformed vitamin A. The gummies contain cane sugar and corn syrup, and the biotin in them can interfere with blood tests. Everything we know sits on the safety page.
